All Sunday School kids and Teen Soyo were invited to a fun day of activity and fellowship at church with Abouna and Khourieh to learn the true meaning of lent on Saturday March 1rst, from 12 noon to 2:30 PM.
As we enter the season of Lent, we wanted to share with you a charming old tradition known as Kyra Sarakosti (Mrs. Lent or Lady Lent), a symbolic way of counting down the weeks until Easter.
Kyra Sarakosti represents the forty-day fasting period before Easter, known as Sarakosti. She is depicted as a paper or dough figure of a woman with no mouth (symbolizing fasting), closed eyes with her hands crossed in prayer, and seven legs; one for each week of Lent. Each Saturday, one leg is cut off as a way to mark the passage of time until Easter Sunday.
This beautiful custom blends faith, culture, and family tradition, reminding us of the spiritual journey of Lent. Even today, many Orthodox households and schools continue this tradition, helping younger generations connect with their heritage in a meaningful way.
Wishing you a peaceful and life renewing Lenten season.
